Still on my hook .....

The four points blanket is still being worked on. I am very much "over" all these rows after rows of single crochet. But it is turning out really cool. I have decided that it will still be a gift, just not a baby gift. This will turn into a very adult sized sofa blanket and I will post pictures here in full color once it is finished. But not on my facebook, because the recipient does follow me there. I can rightfully cover up with a single panel of this one.  One of the repeated questions on the PurlSoho.com post with the pattern was how to make this bigger than baby sized. Easiest way ---- change the yarn to a larger one. I have/will use 8 skeins of worsted weight yarn and it is wonderful.

 THE PERFECT SNUGGLY WEIGHT

In my Serenity location, I have these on deck. My friend Vicki is leading a wonderful project - THE KINDNESS QUILT and she invited me to create a square. Well I am stash busting and I crocheted these four very different squares. I will begin embellishing them for the project. I have some ideas that I think will make these really pretty when they are finished.

Embellishing will feed my creativity as well. It's not just crochet, this will let the "artist" in me have a bit of fun.

And last there is this brightness. Yes it is damned near safety orange. This is the car project. I keep a box in my front seat with a project that I can do a few stitches on in the bank drive thru, or fast food drive thru, or even to grab when I will be riding with a friend.

This is a triangular shawl pattern that I found for free on Ravelry. It's the Oh So Simple Wrap pattern and it is so easy. I am making it from 4 balls of a cotton blend yarn that I found while I was cleaning the corner in the kitchen. (Let's not talk about how long they were buried in that corner.)
I refused to add this yarn to the stash, so it spent a few days beside me while I worked on all that single crochet. I spent those days "designing in my head", then when it moved to the car project box, that designing was not working out. I went on the search for a project that I could easily pick up and put down, Where I could change colors as I wanted and that could expand or contract in size depending on the yarn I had. I could have done an old fashioned granny square shawl, but I wanted something with slightly more style. This is turning out to be perfect.

I sure hope you are having a wonderful day.

It's Nuts but it works.

Wow - I haven't been here in quite some time.

Lot's of reasons that need not be aired publicly here.

I had someone make a comment about how much I accomplish creatively. She wondered how the heck I get so much accomplished. When she said it, I kind of downplayed it a whole lot. But on thinking about it, I thought I would explain how I do get things done.

I spend years "half-ass" doing stuff. I have LOTS of UFO's. I am simplifying my entire life right now and rediscovering those unfinished things had cause a tremendous amount of guilt and stress.

(I uncovered Molly's unframed cross-stitch birth record. It is finished. Not framed. She is 24)

Many years ago, I started blogging and that was the beginning of focusing on my creative side. I needed to make progress on things so I would have something to share. I am not, nor will I ever be one of the BIG bloggers, but I have my group of friends and we love and encourage one another here.

Anyway --- back to how my "system" works.

I almost ALWAYS have multiple projects going. Which sound like craziness, but it really has worked for me.

I have discovered that crochet and cross-stitch travel well - other stuff does not.
The other stuff, is not addressed here - I do a few bits on those projects and leave them to dry on the work table.

Now for the pick up put down explanations.

I have a crochet bag by my sofa - right now it contains a sunset colors inspired infinity scarf project. Yarn from my stash (yay me). I pick it up and put it down. The pattern is a no count required repeat, so I don't even have to make a stitch. This one will soon move to the car (reasons will become evident in a minute)

I leave early on Sunday Morning and spend time alone in the silence with myself and this project. It is a big blanket - stash buster project. Two worsted weight yarns held together. There is a kind of pattern repeat to keep this from getting too busy looking. This will ebb and flow with weather conditions, and will be a long time finishing. As the hot weather creeps in I'll put this in a Huge Zipper Project bag and hang it in the craft closet to pull it out when cold weather gets back. Also a stash project (yay me)

This sweet and soft bit of pastel goodness is a granny square baby blanket. Another stash buster project (the stash is wide and deep - please don't judge) It is my car project. I have it in a plastic tote and I can work on this while riding. Plastic tote allows me to sit this on the ground by the campfire or at ball games, keeping everything dry and clean of debris. (I tried a 31 tote for this and as much as I love that tote for other things, the soft sides just did not work out well.)

I am close to finishing this one. Abby's final college softball season starts next week, so the long hours in the car and at the ball field begin. I'll finish this one and then move the scarf from the bag at home by the sofa into this project. Because.......

This has started as the detailed - must concentrate - project for by the sofa.

AND

requiring reading glasses and the best light I can find.

It is a cross stitch piece for one of our most special babies on the way.
I'll be posting tips and bits about this as it progresses. If there are overnight stays for ball trips, this is organized in a plastic tote box as well, but it certainly is not a mindless, riding in the car, kind of project.

A note on those car projects, after the blanket and the scarf are finished, I will go back to the stash (yes, there is still plenty of stash available) and start another something.

The cross stitch project will consume a large portion of my home time creating. But I combine that with prayer time, so this is a good thing.

Now for some tidbit notes about this.
- I do not sit still well.
- I can be a terrible passenger in the car.
- I cannot read in the car or the sun without getting a headache, but I can crochet.
- I have multiple crochet hooks in each size.
- I think I have 50 pair of small scissors too.
- Keeping things in a convenient to use and move container is key.
-  When I pack up the big blanket for the summer, I will put an index card in the bag noting the hook size.
- MAKING at the ball field - or by the pool - or in the lobby of a hotel - has always caused people to ask what I am making. I always take the time to answer and I have met so many wonderful people this way.
- Make sure the travel projects can be construed as mindless and either easy to keep count or effortless to recount after you have put them down and picked them back up.  (like granny square blankets or repeat patterns for cross stitch)

My craziest softball crocheting story - Softball Princess played travel ball for many years as she grew up. One season I made 88 beanie hats. That means we played at least 88 games that year, because I could make a beanie every full length game.

her college freshman season, I made 150 quarter sized crochet roses.

If you would like regular project updates and some mundane randomness, you can follow my instagram

I do hope you are all doing well.

The tale of a long awaited FINISH -----

Once upon a time - The Man's Mama Norvan (Grandmother) made things too.
We have some of these pretties at our home.
They bring very special memories to our heart and mind.

Sadly, we lost her in 1995.
That was a long, long time ago.
We cleaned out her home.
Years of possessions.
Some came to live at our home.
Some with the other children and grand-children.

I ended up with several things.
Including a Payday Candy Bar Box of stuff.
(don't judge - it was a project box and I had great intentions)

Many years.
Many re-locations of that poor box.
I went searching in my archives and located a picture of it on the shelf in the studio.

See.

Things are changing in my world.
Life is Beautiful and I am staking claim to some of the serenity that comes from
cleaning - purging - finishing
(overcoming hoarding is a battle - but I will leave that for my other blog)
and in the midst of the battle, I lay hands on a Payday Box.

I did not have to open it.

I knew.

But because you don't - here is a quick picture of the contents.

POLYESTER FABRIC (hideous stuff really)
Thread.
Some cut circles
Bits of Cotton
Needles
and a few finished yo-yo bits.

I have two of the creations made from this project box, so I knew what it was.

I'm finishing things.
INTENTION - the word of the year.
And this was the perfect kind of project for clearing my mind of some things.

Here's what I've accomplished.

I dumped it all out.
Sorted.
Tossed.
Traced one of the existing circles.
Cut as many more as I could from the fabric in the box.
Cut cotton balls into smaller bits.
(Gathered the remaining fabric bits in a baggie - told you - this is battle)

And made myself a plastic project box.

Hours were spent alone.
Silent (or with music).
Thinking.
Praying.
Pondering.
Crying.
Healing.
Loving.
Moving forward.

But also -
Threading her needle (with her thread)
The rhythm of hand stitching is meditative, relaxing.
Allowing room for mind wandering.

I made yo-yo after yo-yo
Hundreds of them.
Placing the finished one in a plastic bag.
Picking that bag up and smiling.

This little pile kept growing.

My heart filling with memories of Mama Norvan

Wondering where each scrap came from?

How it came to be that she started making these?

Wondering how she decided which bits went together?

I was relaxed in this process.

Creating without pressure.
(you know putting a project on hold for -  say - 19 years takes a LOT of pressure off)

And one night this week, I finished as many of these as I could make with the contents of the box.

and TA-DAH

Fun little scrap fabric wreath ornaments.

I found my two and added them to the pile. (the far right one was made by her, as was the one between the two pink ones)

Several of these have been spoken for.
All will most definitely stay in the family.

And - that is now one box that is no longer part of my HOARD.
I also have plans for all those fabric bits in the plastic bag too.
(overcoming hoarding is a battle - please do not judge)

LIFE IS CRAZY BEAUTIFUL.

Well Hello There --- haven't seen you in a while.

 I'm still kicking.

Lot's of changes in my world.

But I do still make things.

Actually I've been making LOTS of things.

These two are just the latest Design Team Offerings over at Globecraft and Piccolo.

And cool news - They have asked and I have agreed to continue for the rest of the year as one of the team.

It was very exciting to be invited back.

I'm also requesting prayer for some things going on in my life.

Just things. Nothing serious. But overwhelming none the less.

In good news, the Softball Princess is busily preparing for post season play.

They have advanced into Regional play and are on the road to Nationals.

I'll be spending LOTS of time on the road and by the field this weekend and hopefully for the next several weekends.

Life is Beautiful.

Note - there is a tutorial for the cross and dragonfly here.

G&P Design Team

My first post as a Design team member can be seen over at the G&P Blog

HAPPY THURSDAY! I am really inspired by what the other designers have posted this week.

I'm very excited to share my first project using the Globecraft and Piccolo products with you today.

I'm helping a friend with some Winter Wonderland wedding ideas and who is the very next important (and sweet) bridal party member after the bride and groom? Well ---  the flower girl of course!

Here's how I made and adorable accessory for the flower girl to wear.

G & P SHOPPING LIST
- aged white enamel powder
- tweezers (not a requirement but I love the ones I have)

other items - Links provided for SweetStamps products
- extra fine vintage colored glitter
- clear drying glue
- tulle (I used ivory)
- headband (mine is an ivory satin one)

When I opened my package from G&P - I was blown away by the detail of the laser cuts. The bookboard is not heavy or bulky, but it is very strong.

I opened my Snowflakes and grabbed my pointy tweezers and punched all the excess bits from the laser cut. LOOK AT THAT DETAIL.
Knowing that the back of this may show I covered the front and back of the accent.

The back of the accent was covered with Vintage Silver and the front with the Aged White. (aged white is a wonderful white with sparkly bits - simply beautiful)

I watched several videos previously published before I started ------  the links to the videos are at the main website.

Here are my "QUICK TIPS"
--- roll the container of the powder several times before each use and after adding the excess back to the jar.

--- if doing both sides - I discovered that a ceramic tile was a great nonstick surface to heat on.

--- on these fine detail shapes, a lot of my powder would blow off with the initial heating - I learned quickly to hold the shape with my tweezers and heat from the bottom until it started melting, then finish from the top.

--- the longer you heat the powder the smoother the finish. (I used the heatflash technique for the white side and heated the back to a smooth finish)

Now for the pretty pictures.

Roll the powder to prepare for pouring.

I used the embossing adhesive all along the shape.

Sprinkle with the powder (catch the excess on a folded paper - the fold makes it easy to pour back into the container).

Want the finish thicker? Simply reapply the adhesive and powder and heat again.

Oh look --- pretty.

I wanted a bit more sparkle to these - so I used the fine applicator tip with the Glastique GLOSS and added flat backed rhinestones to the rounded areas of the snowflake and to the centers of each of the connected ones.

Let those dry and then to strengthen the shape even more, I covered it all with more of the Glastique GLOSS finishing gel.

I gathered my tulle for the headband and then, using a small flat paintbrush, I randomly stroked more Glastique on the tulle and sprinkled with extrafine glitter. The Glastique dries clear and flexible and makes a great glitter adhesive.

Then using a heavy body glue - I glued the large snowflake and some cutoff small flake accents to the headband.

All that's left to do is add one really cute flower girl.

Be sure to come back tomorrow to see the next amazing creation.

Life is beautiful ---

tell me the stories ....

We make nativities.
The current ones get lots of road miles.
He cuts and sands.
I trace.
He wood burns.
I paint.
He stains.
We sell. But honestly, the ones we give to our littles are the ones that mean the most to me.

The story of the first one I made is at the link.

We gifted this little one with a set this year.
She spread it out and Dad sent us this picture.
Cute.

My hope is that she will play and really learn the story.
Then teach it to her little brother.
And so forth and so on.
Much like my girls did.

(at the end of this post is a fabulous active way to use this for advent devotions)

Then I get this picture via text.

"Rebecca said this is "Jofus" I said you mean
Joseph...."nope, Jofus" "

How cute - and if she is playing with it, there will be learning occuring.

Merry Christmas.

************************************

I cannot take credit for this idea, but it is a wonderful one.

A friend of mine uses their wood block nativity along with some other props for their Advent readings.

The various figures are placed around the house with the numbered envelopes.
Each night the search out the correct envelope and have the devotional.
For instance
Night one - the angel comes to Mary.
Night two - The angel comes to "Jofus"
Night three - Joseph and Mary together read the scroll.

All the while the empty manger sits on the table by the tree.

For the twenty five days leading up to Christmas. The story unfolds and the characters in the story slowly make the trip through the house to Bethlehem.

On Christmas Eve, Baby Jesus appears in the manger.
On Christmas Day - before the gift frenzy begins - the Wise Men bring their gifts to the new Baby.

A beautiful tradition for the kids.

If you choose to adapt this idea for your Christmas, please leave a comment here, I would love to hear your stories.

Much love and a Very Merry Christmas to all of you.

inspired - and given

So there are these friends.

New baby boy. (the baby brother of little miss rebecca - she is the owner of the butterfly artwork)

I needed a gift.

Happy DO Year underway.

Stash usage is a serious part of the DO idea.

And So here is the next giftie ----

I stalked mom's pinterest boards and discovered ------ the following pin was my inspiration

Miss Jill McDonald makes beautiful handcut illustrations that she then sells these wonderful prints of.

Being an artist myself, I twisted the idea into my own version of the artwork.

I knew little Chips' room was going to be blue, so I gathered several blue themed scrapbook papers and set up my CRICUT machine. I cut the letters - attempting to use a variety that I could mix and mingle.

I painted the background of my canvas pale blue --- latex from a miss-mix shelf at Lowe's.

After I cut my letters I randomized the lines and laid them out on the canvas.

I taped off the edges to keep my spacing fairly accurate.  Hours later, I had Mod Podged all the letters into place.

I peeled off the tape and decided it was a little bland for my liking.

So I grabbed some blue glimmer mist. Spritz away.

I then took my heat gun and dried the mist. (to keep the letters from peeling up at all)

I discovered that the ModPodge bubbled with the heatgun and it left this awesome texture on the canvas. (I call that kind of discovery a Happy Accident ---- although every now and then it can be an OH SH*&)

After the spritzing and blow drying - I sprayed the entire thing with clear spray sealer.

And called it DONE.

I love it ---- I hope mom and little Chip love it too.

On wings of love.......

So I have lots of sweet littles in my life.

Rebecca Peterson is one of them.

Several months back - little Missy announced to us that she was going to be a BIG SISTER.

I stalked her mama's pinterest for ideas to make a gift for the new baby.
(that post in a few days)

While I was mulling that over,
I started on a little giftie for Rebecca.
(BIG SISTER had to get a gift too)

I sent her dad a text and it was determined that pink butterflies would be the ticket.

I painted a 12x12 canvas green.

Then punched sixteen circles.

Some glue and patience later they are laid out on the canvas.

Then I wanted dimensional butterflies and I had these great sequins in the right shape.

I punched assorted paper ones too.

I bent the sequins for dimension.

stacked them on the paper shapes
(see the beads)

I strung the beads on light gauge wire.

Wrapped to the back to secure.

Because I KNOW someone will ask, here's how I bent the sequins using the back side of my xacto knife blade.

After making all the little butterflies, I moved them around and decided on the layout I liked.

If you are ever around me creating - there is that moment that I refer too as "look - it sings"

More glue - this time a clear drying tacky glue.

The finished artwork

I likes this one a LOT.

The full front view.

and ------

A sweetie little missy enjoying opening her present.

preparing for a show.....

sorry - these are cell phone pictures.

I am busily preparing for an artist market

Saturday November 16

Danielsville, Georgia

Historic Courthouse

It has been one of my best shows in the past, and if the weather is good, should be again.

There will be a few

Lace and button angels

A new item design for me.

I bought the wings stamp years ago

Had not stamped one thing with it ever
(please make me feel better here and pretend you do this)

I didn't even tuck it away, it was on the shelf in full view, I just had no idea how to use it.

Then the muse came to visit.

I LIKE HER

Made on a similar design as the button fairies.
Stamped and embossed wings on card stock - heavy plastic - vellum - etc
Metal wire threaded with buttons/beads/stuffs
Added lace
Pretty little face
Assorted halos (lace, jewelry findings, rhinestones, big buttons)

Note - none of these buttons are super valuable - they are a mixture of glass, metal, MotherofPearl and plastic.

I ramble through my stash (playing) and decide what fits the personality of the sweet face and wings

There are also these wonderful  - children appropriate - wood block nativity sets.

I've painted several sets and, with help, gotten them all stained.

Nice, stunning, 20 inch wide, butcher board  with sawmill marks not included.

Maybe, I'll see you guys on Saturday

Friday, October 11, 2013

It's not all been tags.

I have been super busy - with my grown up girl job - church - and some serious studio time.

Lot's has been making tags. But there have been some other things.

I've a batch of angels and/or fairies going too.

I stamped faces and made the heads.

Went through scrap papers and punch wings matching sweet faces with wings.

On Wednesday night I gathered three little ones, and a box of buttons.

Dump out the buttons and start the process of dressing these little pretties.

It amazes me how each one quickly defines who they want to be.

Take SUNSET (above) - I started looking for blue and teal buttons - then I ran across that crochet button. I laid it aside because I liked it. Well Miss Sunset up there, she liked it too. She insisted that was absolutely what she was wearing. And since I am the mother of some strong-willed-and opinionated girls (wonder where they got that?), I knew better than to argue with her.

So shades of the sunset she will wear.

The sunset colors are a perfect accent for that tiny bit of red orange in her wings.

Again - I was looking for teals and silvers this sweet friend too. But you see that first round button up there - the glass one with the patina and worn silvering - well she was looking over in the box with me and she squealed when she spied it. THAT ONE ----- I picked it up and turned it over in my hand - the glass button sparkled in the lamplight. She said "I am not Cinderella, my whole dress will be crystal - not just my shoes"

Ok then, your name has to be Crystal, was my response.

Look at the sweet face - yes - she got her way.

Pretty teal blue sparkly wings and a full length crystal dress. (all clear faceted buttons and beads.) She will be beautiful in the window.

The last one I finished last night was this little lovely, I named her Stormy. Not like in destructive storms. She sat there quietly pondering her choices. Building and approaching slowly. When she saw that top button - I heard a little rumble then the flash of lightning as slowly the clouds formed into a wonderful quick little summer type of storm. It's an old black button - slightly dinged - it still had threads in it. I picked it up and asked her if she was sure about this. She said "look at the back". Suddenly I could see what she did. The fading, the still dark spots even those little crazing marks. We agreed - this would make the perfect dress for her. Together we kept looking for the rest of her outfit. It's a little grunge - a little grey mother of pearl classy - just a little extra texture - and then a very simple silver "shoe". I think she looks quite striking.

It's amazing to me - a tiny sweet face image - a pair of paper wings - a little glass bubble - they take on a personality. I lay her down nearby - start running my hands through the buttons - I pick up this one - then that one - another one - holding them up to her - suddenly - she and both just KNOW - we know the one - THIS ONE - then we add to it and when it is RIGHT we both almost literally dance with the excitement.

You will find me in the studio ---- dancing with the fairies and angels.

These three fairies, a few more, and some angels will be available at the Jones Chapel UMC craft and yard sale on October 19 -

Have a great weekend.
